Join the Young AFCEANs for a bipartisan  event on how to discuss politics in professional settings.

Election day may be over, but in an industry where political decisions can impact the bottom line the conversations about the results are just beginning. At our happy hour event attendees will gain insight into how to discuss politics in a constructive way. We'll talk about how to respond when a client or supervisor asks, "so what do you think of the election?"

Alexandra Kuhns, Meetings and Events Manager, Navy League of the United States
Alexandra Kuhns started her career in Washington, D.C. as a White House intern in the Office of Political Affairs.  She became immersed in politics working as a lobbyist and then as a scheduler for a prominent New Jersey congressman.  After leaving the political world, she forged a career in hospitality with Marriott properties including The Ritz-Carlton.  She is now the Meetings and Events Manager at the Navy League of the United States, a non-profit which supports the sea services and puts on one of the premier global maritime expositions.  Alexandra holds an Honors Bachelor Arts from the University of Toronto.  She is a proud Air Force wife and lives with her husband in Springfield, VA.

Maryaam Atmar, Founder and CEO of MAIH Group

Ms. Atmar is the founder and CEO of MAIH Group. MAIH group is an international consulting and contracting firm collaborating with several  private and public NGOs in Afghanistan, US and  UK. As an entrepreneur, she built her company from the ground up. She now shares her expertise to coach other Afghan female entrepreneurs develop their businesses worldwide. Ms.Atmar is the  director of  Afghana, a non-profit organization which  promotes women's  education and  training. She is also the  managing director of a foreign  language institute with a large number of female students. Ms.Atmar has an extensive background in investments and financial sector. She holds a B.A. in Psychology.

Camille Tuutti, Execuive Editor, Nextgov

Camille Tuutti is the executive editor at Nextgov, a division of Atlantic Media, where she's responsible for the editorial vision and strategy.  She previously served as editorial director at FedScoop, and prior to that, was a staff writer and "People" section editor at Federal Computer Week. Before that, Camille worked as a news editor and reporter, covering government contracting and IT. Her current tech obsessions include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and emerging technology. Originally from Stockholm, Sweden, Camille has called Washington, D.C., her home for the past 15 years.

George Meyers, Managing Partner, The Meyers Group

In a town known for business and negotiation, George Meyers is recognized as one of the most accomplished business leaders in Washington, D.C., having achieved financial success on behalf of numerous clients. He has over 25 years of extensive hands-on experience working in the federal government and in government affairs. He possesses an in-depth understanding of federal government acquisition and the legislative process. He is equally experienced in navigating Washington’s political environment and is a recognized expert in business development, international trade development and federal marketing. This combination of skill and experience has allowed Mr. Meyers to generate millions of dollars in actionable business opportunities for clients. He is considered a master at using innovative thinking and creative strategies to secure funding for clients. His energy and enthusiasm are contagious.

Mr. Meyers is also a guest lecturer on acquisition policy and has spoken before numerous corporate groups on the topic of doing business with the federal government. He has moderated panels for the security, intelligence and aviation communities and has authored numerous articles on shaping and winning business in the federal government. He is considered an expert in the aviation, transportation, and logistics industries.

One of Mr. Meyers’ early successes was his effort on behalf of President Clinton’s Mid-Delta Empowerment Zone Project in Greenville, Mississippi, where he advised community leaders on a strategy to “rebuild” the Mississippi delta region using skilled aviation-industry jobs and resources. Subsequently, Mr. Meyers was assigned to the Pentagon as Chief Acquisition Manager for the United States Secretary of the Air Force, where he led a team in acquiring and modifying over $9B in aircraft programs, and was able to secure funding to start a $6B modernization program. Mr. Meyers was then assigned as the Chief Congressional Liaison for the United States Secretary of the Air Force in Washington, D.C. He worked with his Air Force and Industry counterparts to formulate strategies and enlist Congressional support for the Administration’s key policies and programs. He authored the legislative strategy for a $10B aviation program and brokered a multiple-year contract worth $7B.

Upon retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Meyers served as Government Affairs and Business Development Director for Defense and Intelligence programs at a Washington, D.C.-based firm, where he directed the company’s strategic intelligence programs. He also served as a Program Manager for critical DIA, CIA and NGA Intelligence Programs, where he increased profit by 21%. He also secured $25M in federal funding for an R&D effort.

He was asked to join Lockheed Martin where he helped create a $32B pipeline and managed over $1B in international opportunities in 43 nations—with particular emphasis in developing nations. He led the emerging markets team for Lockheed Martin’s Intelligence business, directing company strategy on legislative, international, and new and emerging programs. Industry credits him with creating the strategy and shaping the landscape for a $6.6B Defense contract--which he eventually won.

While at Cassidy and Associates he was responsible for business development, industry teaming, and international trade.  He regularly built outreach plans to shape and win multi-million dollar programs.  Under his guidance several clients achieved a 200% increase in revenue.  He also designed /wrote the business development plan for a $4B defense company—and then executed the contact plans to win business.  He built the Cassidy cyber practice and was responsible for client success in several classified programs.  He also helped write several cyber bills for Congress.

Mr. Meyers is an expert at crafting acquisition plans and has led several “start-ups” through successful “funding rounds” while also winning government business. He is also a monthly Columnist writing about business development and legislative issues for several monthly publications.

Mr. Meyers is a commercial pilot with over twenty years of flying experience, serving in numerous conflict zones, including two tours in support of Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr. Meyers currently serves as a corporate advisor and on the Board of Directors for several companies who have experienced double-digit growth and profit due to his counsel.

He is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and received his Bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University and currently lives in Washington, D.C.

AFCEA NOVA’s 37th Anniversary Black Tie Tribute will focus on serving those who are still serving. Grappling with an unrelenting and frenetic operations tempo for the past 15 years, our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and CoastGuardsmen have been at the tip of the spear in defense of our nation. Some have served three, four, five or more deployments in hostile areas around the world. Their service has been characterized by honor and valor and no sacrifice has been too great for them.

Women in NOVA: IT Systems in Support of Financial Accountability

WIN's volunteer Board, Sub-Committees and WIN membership work to increase awareness and diversity, and influence positive change through thoughtful outreach, event sponsorship, networking, and mentoring.

Defense Department is getting closer to full audit accountability and will stick to its plan to achieve it.  Over the last couple of years, the audits have yielded substantial and measurable results. Despite years of implementing modern business systems, many of the audits are uncovering IT system weaknesses. In this session, our panel will focus on:

  • How IT can help us achieve the goal of  a clean audit
  • Implications of findings on business systems
  • Benefits from new tools such as analytics 
  • How does cybersecurity and other IT controls lead to a clean opinion
  • Can benefits of newer technology such as Cloud help


Ms. Shirley Reed, SES
Chief Information Officer, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

Ms. Reed provides executive leadership and direction, broad technical knowledge, skill, and experience on all technology, innovation and financial information matters. She is responsible for the development of procedures and tools to ensure consistency of approach and focus on integration of processes within the financial management community.

Prior to assuming her current position she was assigned as the Director, Defense Enterprise Accounting and Management System (DEAMS) within the office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Operations and was responsible for overseeing the functional design, development, testing, and deployment of DEAMS across the Air Force. Mr. Drew Morgan, SES
Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army, Financial Information Management

Mr. Drew Morgan serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army, Financial Information Management. In this position, he advises, coordinates and directs actions to achieve financial business transformation Army wide, capitalizing on on-going programs and projects, ensuring compatibility with and interoperability between Army financial systems and Defense systems, incorporating advances in Army information technology, communications, and Government processes and systems. He serves the Army Financial Management community as Chief Architect and Chief Financial Information Officer.

Ms. Ann-Cecile McDermott, SES 

Assistant Deputy Commandant, Programs and Resources
Fiscal Director of the Marine Corps

Mrs. Ann-Cecile M. McDermott is the Assistant Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources for financial matters and the Fiscal Director of the Marine Corps. She is responsible to the Commandant, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, and the Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources for formulating fiscal principles and policies; to prescribe procedures and systems which will exercise effective control over financial operations of the Marine Corps in the functional areas of budget, accounting and finance, and audit and review. Mrs. McDermott also assists, advises, and acts for the Commandant in all matters on appropriated and non-appropriated funds. Prior to assuming her current position, Mrs. McDermott was the Deputy Commander, Resource Management for Marine Corps Systems Command. In this capacity, she was responsible for the command's financial management, comptroller activities, and human resource management. She also served as the Competency Director for the financial management, workforce management, operations/office management, international programs, and corporate operations communities.

Debra S. Del Mar

Ms. Del Mar is a leader in government financial modernization and agile information technology application. With over 35 years of experience, her comprehensive knowledge and experience in management consulting, systems consolidation/modernization and business transformation distinguish her as an industry thought-leader in financial improvement.  As a highly regarded business executive, her relationships are expansive and collaborative, spanning both government and private sectors – enabling her to be an effective spokesperson and passionate advocate for Federal business reform, standardization and simplification.

Ms. Del Mar possesses a strong public service commitment, evident by her volunteer detail in the Department of Defense, as well as her ongoing work to align contractor objectives and practices with public interests.  She actively consults with key government executives and is a regular speaker and author on strategic business imperatives.  She contributes generously of her time for the betterment of the DoD –as the current American Society of Military Comptroller’s (ASMC) Corporate Advisory Group Chair, the ASMC Washington Chapter Corporate Vice President, and has chaired the ASMC National Capital Region Professional Development Institute (PDI) since 2006.
